POST #17 – READING – DISCUSSION - EXPLAINED: MODERN ART VS POSTMODERN ART

One thing I learned from the reading was that although that modern art was exploring new thoughts, they also still valued coherence and intended to have their art have deeper meaning. Even though they wanted to move away from tradition they still held that art should have a purpose. Something else was that postmodern art branched from modern art in the way that it doesn’t have one set style, it can combine things. It wants to focus on deconstruction rather than one sense of understanding. I also found that modern art was serious and wanted to find truth and postmodern art can be more playful or trying to cause chaos. Another difference was that postmodern artists use a lot of appropriation in their art. Modern artists tried to come up with things on their own, but postmodern artist would take images from other sources and use them.

discussion question

In the context of Fluxus, John Cage conceptualized art, focusing on the idea that

art is a mental concept rather than a craft-based object. In a previous movement,

which artist and his artwork conceptualized art in a similar manner? What is the

name of the movement, the artist and the artwork that he pioneered, in order to

conceptualize art?

Before Fluxus, Marcel Duchamp of the Dada movement took much of the same approach towards art. He started to see art not as something that had to be technical or require skill, but that it could simply be an idea. His most notable work was Fountain, which was a urinal he presented as art. Many people were outraged by his piece during his time, but that was simply Duchamp's intention. Viewers were supposed to question the idea of what art is. Much like Cage, Duchamp was heavily focused on the conceptual side of the mind when it came to art, rather than the visual. By doing this, he allowed for the pathway of art to shift towards intellectualism and meaning rather than purely visual aesthetics. This lead to his major influence on the development of conceptual art.
