POST #10 – LECTURE – INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION

Image
The  Industrial Revolution  changed everyday life in a big way and pushed both art and technology in new directions. As cities grew and industry expanded, artists started to think differently, leading to the rise of the  avant garde  and new ideas tied to  Modernism . Instead of following tradition, artists focused more on what they personally saw and felt. This is clear in  Impressionism , where  Claude Monét  and  Edouard Manét  painted real-life scenes using  plein air painting , like in  Bar at the Folies-Bergère . Moving forward,  Post Impressionism  artists such as  Vincent Van Gogh  and  Cezanne  added more emotion and structure to their work, while  Symbolists  like  Paul Gauguin  focused on deeper meaning. New movements like  Fauvism  and  Cubism , with artists like  Picasso  and  Braque , broke objects into shapes, as seen in  Les Dem...

POST #8 – LECTURE - RENAISSANCE – REALISM

Image
This lecture explored how painting and art evolved from the  Byzantine  period to later movements such as the  Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque Painting, Rococo, Neoclassical, Romanticism, and Realism . One of the biggest changes happened during the  Early Renaissance , when artists began focusing more on  Humanism  and  Naturalism . Artists like  Giotto  helped begin this transition by making figures appear more emotional and lifelike. He often used the technique of  fresco , which involves painting directly onto wet plaster so the image becomes part of the wall itself. The Renaissance was also shaped by new ideas about science, mathematics, and perspective. Architect  Brunelleschi helped develop  one point perspective (linear perspective) , which allowed artists to create the illusion of depth...

POST #9 – READING, DISCUSSION – FIERO FINEBERG PAINTING

Image
The readings by Gloria K. Fiero and Jonathan Fineberg discuss the changes that occurred in art from the Renaissance period to the present time. According to Fiero, the Renaissance period saw artists focusing on nature and the body. The artists believed that by studying nature, they could create realistic and accurate paintings and sculptures. One of the notable changes in the period was the introduction of perspective, which helped the artists create the illusion of depth on a flat surface. In addition, the Renaissance period saw the adoption of ideas from ancient Greece and Rome, particularly on the concepts of balance, proportion, and beauty. Another notable change is the recognition of the artist as a person with creativity, as opposed to a person with skills. Fineberg, in his reading, argues that the modern artist did not just follow nature but started to experiment with different styles and techniques in order to express their ideas and emotions. Overall, the readings discuss the ...
