POST #9 – READING, DISCUSSION – FIERO FINEBERG PAINTING

The readings by Gloria K. Fiero and Jonathan Fineberg discuss the changes that occurred in art from the Renaissance period to the present time. According to Fiero, the Renaissance period saw artists focusing on nature and the body. The artists believed that by studying nature, they could create realistic and accurate paintings and sculptures. One of the notable changes in the period was the introduction of perspective, which helped the artists create the illusion of depth on a flat surface. In addition, the Renaissance period saw the adoption of ideas from ancient Greece and Rome, particularly on the concepts of balance, proportion, and beauty. Another notable change is the recognition of the artist as a person with creativity, as opposed to a person with skills. Fineberg, in his reading, argues that the modern artist did not just follow nature but started to experiment with different styles and techniques in order to express their ideas and emotions. Overall, the readings discuss the changes that occurred in art over time, with the artist trying different ways of representing the world.

In the painting The Old Guitarist  Pablo Picasso emphasizes emotion over realism. In this painting, Picasso uses shades of blue to evoke a sad feeling that depicts the loneliness and poverty of the old musician. The brown guitar is the focal point in the painting that differentiates it from the other shades of blue, which signifies that music is the man’s companion.
