TITLE – POST #16 – LECTURE – EXPERIMENTAL FILM - FLUXUS
Concepts behind experimental film began with artists pushing away from traditional cinematic practice and focusing more on concepts. Photography was seen in rayographs by Manray, which did not require a camera and Rotoreliefs by Marcel Duchamp which emphasized movement and illusion. Along with Hans Richter, these artists were integral to forming the basis of what would become experimental film with their focus on abstractions. With the invention of television, through mechanical television by John Logie Baird and electronic television by Philo Farnsworth, audiences were exposed to new technology that would influence how we viewed moving images. Postmodern Art came about with a large emphasis on the mixing of concepts. This included Characteristics of Postmodernism such as pluralism, appropriation, as well as concepts like Simulacra by Jean Baudrillard, which led into Hyperreality. There was Robert Rauschenberg's creation of the Combine as well as Pop Art which used popular imagery like that of Andy Warhol. Fluxus artists focused on the process of creating art, with art itself focusing on the experience, such as Piano Activities, happenings, and ephemeral installations.
